The Weeping Water Agricultural Society Auditorium was one of four structures built as part of the Depression-era New Deal that were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2023.
The two-story Streamline Moderne style building was constructed in 1938 with the help of a $40,000 Works Progress Administration grant. The WPA was a New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings. The building served as the Cass County Ag Society Auditorium until the county fair was moved its current location north of town in 1967.
Richard & Sharon Nickels purchased the building in 1968 and operated Nickels Trailer Sales until the early 2000s.
The Weeping Water Community Building Foundation purchased the building, which was in disrepair, in 2007. They set out to raise funds and refurbish it, making it available as new space for the city office, library, community building, and senior center. The project was finished thanks to the support of generous donors and federal grant programs.
